Obituary

Shirley L. Crossan

Shirley Leota (Howe) Crossan, 94, passed away on April 13, 2023, in Covington, WA. She was born January 9, 1929, in Houghton, SD, to Clifford and Veronica (Vera) Howe. She was one of nine children.

After high school, Shirley became certified as a country teacher. She taught school for a short time before marrying Benjamin Crossan in 1949, after he returned from service in the U.S. Navy. Shirley and Ben moved their 3 young children from South Dakota to Washington State in 1954. Together they purchased property in East Kent near Lake Morton, where they built their home and raised their family.

Shirley and Ben worked side by side in three of their own businesses over the years: a barber/beauty shop in Covington, a cultured marble shop in Auburn, and a miniature horse farm at their home. In her free time, Shirley enjoyed spending time with her family, baking, watching sports and playing card games.

Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Ben, and her eight siblings. She is survived by her children, Barry (Nancy) Crossan, Claudette (Dan) Lanning, and Mark (Sue) Crossan, her 13 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.

Shirley was a kind, loving and generous person. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her. She will be interred with her husband at Tahoma National Cemetery in May. There will be a private memorial on June 3, 2023, in Covington, WA.
