Jon Carlson Obituary

On Saturday, October 28, 2023, Jon A. Carlson, loving husband and father of 4 children and a bonus daughter passed away at the age of 82 after a 2 year battle with mouth and neck cancer. His family will greatly miss him but are glad he is no longer suffering and is most likely whooping it up with all his family and friends in his new home. Born on March 25, 1941, in Lewis County, WA to Emil and Eva (Weston) Carlson, he is survived by his wife, Barbara (Greenfield), who was the love of his life. They married on June 23, 1963, and lived life to the fullest for 60 years together. He served in the Air Force before selling real estate for 39 years. They raised 4 children (+ a bonus daughter); Jon (Elizabeth) Carlson of Raymond, WA, Melissa Phillips of Lynden, WA, Lara (Todd Baker) Carlson of Maple Valley, WA, Brent (Sandy Streeper) Carlson of Seattle, WA and bonus daughter Kim (Bruce) Odegaard of Florence, AZ. Also surviving him: his sister, Marlene (Larry) Stranz of Lacey, WA and his grandchildren, Parker and Jackson Phillips, Samantha Baker and River Carlson as well as his 4 nieces, Donnell Long, Pamela Nast, Traci Darmody and Wendy Spangler.

He was always known for his sense of humor, being a good friend and never meeting a stranger. You never went thirsty when visiting as he enjoyed sharing his bounty with all. It was always martini time at his house. He had a love for all sports whether he was watching, coaching, or playing. His passion for soccer was what he will be most remembered for as he coached, refereed, and played the sport for many years. Before and during retirement, he enjoyed golf with many friends. He had a varied taste for fine art and would tell you all about the artist and the deal he was able to get on the pieces he had in his collection. He never met a home repair he could not fix, and it was never done till everything was put back and cleaned up. Jon and Barbara traveled numerous places: including a yearlong family stay in Australia where they traveled widely. Together their travels have taken them throughout the US by motorhome, to Europe, Africa, Peru and Ecuador in South America, parts of Mexico and Canada. They also cruised to a multitude of places. He loved to tell stories and his jokes and quips were plentiful. May you have many wonderful laughs and travels now.

The family would like to thank all the doctors, nurses and medical staff that cared for Jon. He always appreciated your kindness and honesty throughout his treatment.

He will be placed at Tahoma National Cemetery, ceremony to be held on November 13, 2023, at 11:30am.
