Gordon Stuart Warner

Gordon Stuart Warner left this life to join his wife of 65 years in heaven on February 25^th, 2020.  They were separated by death for less than five months.

Gordon was born on March 26^th, 1929, in Seattle, Washington, to Sylvia and Romaine Warner.  He was one of six children.  Gordon grew up in Ballard.  He would often play baseball at Gilman ballfield right by their house where he became a pretty decent ballplayer. 

Following a family tragedy, where Gordon’s younger 14-year-old brother Ray drowned after falling off a boat in Puget Sound, Gordon’s parents decided to leave Ballard and move the family to Allyn, Washington.  There Gordon, in his late teens, continued his baseball “career” by playing for the Allyn baseball team.  They competed with other teams around the Key and Kitsap Peninsula areas.  Some of the players were pretty good; in fact, one of Gordon’s teammates was eventually drafted into the minor leagues and eventually made it to the majors.

Gordon, a pretty good ball player in his own right, got drafted too; unfortunately, it was Uncle Sam who drafted him.  The year was 1951 when he entered the U.S. Army at the age of 21.  Prior to leaving to serve in the military, Gordon was introduced to Dawn Darlene Coleman by Gordon’s sister Ethel.  Ethel was dating Dawn’s older brother Barney at the time.  Gordon and Dawn continued their relationship by writing letters to each other while Gordon was away. 

While serving in Korea, Gordon was wounded while in combat.  He spent time in various MASH units until ending up in a hospital in Japan where he continued to recover.  He received the Purple Heart.  After his recovery, Gordon served in the Military Police in Japan.

After being honorably discharged from the military in 1953, Gordon returned home to Allyn where the relationship between him and Dawn continued and grew stronger.  Not long afterwards he asked Dawn to be his wife. 

They made their first home in Shelton, Washington, where their first son, Dan, was born.  In 1957 they moved to Seattle when Gordon got a job with Ford Motor Company.  A year later Mike was born.  After 30+ years, Gordon retired from Ford.

In 1990 Gordon and Dawn moved to Auburn, Washington.  This was a time in their lives where they really enjoyed spending time together, working in their yard, taking walks around Auburn, attending Auburn Free Methodist Church, and entertaining guest at their home.

Gordon enjoyed serving at church, both when at the Rainier Avenue Church in Seattle and at the Auburn church.

Gordon was an avid baseball fan, having season tickets while the Mariners played at the Kingdome.  He was also an avid softball player, playing on various teams and ending his softball “career” while playing for the Auburn Seniors League team, retiring his glove at the age of 75.

Gordon Warner is survived by Sons Dan Warner and Mike (Barbara) Warner; grandchildren Shaina Warner and Jeffrey Warner.
