Dwight U Hampton

Dwight U. Hampton (73), of Kent, Washington, passed away on April 28, 2023.

Dwight is survived by his two children, Danielle I. Hampton-Gentry, Dwight U. (Paige) Hampton II, grandson, Sekai, and mother Viola O. Hampton. Dwight was predeceased by his father, Calvin L. Hampton. He is also survived by his siblings, Owen S. Hampton, Glinda Loving, S. Islamah Rashid, Ain-Akilah Barnett (James), and Vickie Franklin (James-deceased), along with his niece, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, a plethora of family members, and cherished friends.

Dwight began his journey in Camp Hood, Texas, now known to be Fort Hood, Texas on May 22, 1949 to his parents, Viola O. Hampton and Calvin L. Hampton. Dwight’s childhood eventually brought him to Washington state alongside his parents and siblings. As a family, they resided in the Central area of Seattle, Washington and eventually settled in Kent, Washington. Dwight attended Leschi Elementary, Washington Junior High School, and Kent-Meridian High School (1967) where he participated in football, wrestling, and baseball. He proudly enlisted in the United States Army on November 30, 1967 where he served his country for three years and was eventually honorably discharged leaving active duty as a sergeant. Dwight was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Parachutist Badge “Jump Wings,” Bronze Star Medal, and the Combat Infantryman Badge. Along with receiving those medals and badges from the United States Army he was skilled as a Marksman and a Sharpshooter that prepared him for active ground combat while over in Vietnam. Upon returning home from the Vietnam War, Dwight became a Firefighter with Station 25- Capitol Hill for three years.

When you meet Dwight, the first thing that stands out is his beautiful smile and that giggle of his. He always had to have his coffee in the morning and a glass of (whole) milk. He had an excitement for music with Donny Hathaway being a favorite. Dwight was a man of intelligence and distinguishing character who loved his country, community, and most all his family. He was enormously creative with his hands which produced many wooden furnishings and fitments that surely ones still hold onto today. Dwight was a dedicated hard worker and took pride in overseeing and preserving the property where his parents raised him and his siblings the greater part of their childhood and where they still reside today.

Dwight’s children request: Lighting a candle from time to time… think of Dwight with a smile as you light the candle and say “Did I tell you I love you today?” knowing his soul is at peace and he is resting and smiling upon all his treasurable loved ones.
