May Pease

January 23, 1918 ~ May 17, 2019 (age 101)

May Fern (Broyles) Pease, 101 years 3 months and 24 days old, of Kent, passed away on May 17, 2019, at her home. She was born January 23, 1918, to Archie C. and Ruby Ray (Deitrick) Broyles in Welch, OK. The second of 10 kids, the family moved to the Ozarks of Missouri running and operating a saw mill, hueing railroad ties they made by hand. Nobody was left out of the work load, as each kid had their place and job to do. She would tell her family; they didn’t know what work really was and would recall and share instances of her childhood. She graduated from Afton High School, Afton, Oklahoma and attended the nursing program at Texas A & M. She married Eugene Pease on Easter Sunday, April 17, 1938.
May and Gene started their family while owning and operating their own dairy farm, with each of their 4 kids being born in OK. As the rest May’s family had moved to the Pacific Northwest, May and Gene eventually followed arriving in the Yakima Valley working in the fields and harvesting crops as well as owning and operating a second hand store in Prosser. Eventually they settled in Renton where they owned and operated 2 locations of Save More Lumber. After they sold the lumberyard, May and Gene could still be found at the local auction yards, buying both antiques and livestock, as they operated their mini-farm, raising chickens, ducks, turkeys, pheasants, among others and of course, garden vegetables.
She had a strong faith and connection with our Heavenly Father, one that showed love and commitment, wanting to do and serve. For as long as we can remember, she always had crafting projects going on to make things for those she loved and cared for; whether clothes, baby clothes blankets (sewn and crocheted), even teddy bears for grandkids, even designing and making quilts for each and every family member; it was her way of expressing to each and every one of us the love she had for us!
For the last several years, she would sew clothes and blankets that were sent to mission’s around the world. She loved working in her garden and would love to bring flowers to church every Sunday when she could. This past summer, her love of antiquing continued as her family took her around the Walla Walla Valley collecting more treasures that she would reminisce about having or using, sharing her love of treasure collecting with those around her. Canning and preserving was still something she continued to do, putting up 4 boxes of apricot’s and 20 lbs. strawberry preserves this past summer too, her favorites! Recently at her 101 birthday, family shared stories of her camping, fishing and hunting. She continued to love quilting and word search puzzles and spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene, on June 23, 1990; her parents, Archie and Ruby Broyles; 3 sisters, Annie Pearl, Naomi, Mary Lou; 5 brothers: Archie, Archie’s Twin, Charlie, William, Jacob; and son: Arthur.
She is survived by three daughters: Margaret Krout of Moses Lake, Agnes and Robert Newlin of Kent, Nancy and Jimmie Daves of Waitsburg, daughter-in-law Norma Pease; 14 grandchildren, Scott Payne of Oroville, Sharon (Daves) Brooks of Waitsburg, Brenda (Krout) Jordan of Kent, Marvin Erickson of Kent, Jimmie R.
